What to Expect at Your Child’s First Gymnastics Class
Your child’s first gymnastics class is mostly warm-ups, simple skills, and a whole lot of fun. At The Zone Athletics Center in Evansville, a coach greets you at the door, your child joins a small group, and they spend the hour moving, playing, and learning the very first building blocks of gymnastics. There is nothing to be nervous about. Here is exactly how that first class goes, so you and your child walk in feeling ready.
What happens when you walk in?
When you arrive, check in at the front desk. A staff member will meet your child and walk them over to their group. You are welcome to watch from our viewing area. The class starts with a short warm-up. Think stretching, light cardio, and a few silly movements to shake out the wiggles. This helps little bodies get loose and ready. It also gives your child a minute to settle in and feel comfortable before any real skills begin.
What will my child actually do?
Every class is built around the basics. Your child will move through stations and try simple skills on soft, kid-friendly equipment. For our youngest gymnasts in Pre-K, that means obstacle courses, learning stations, and beginner skills on the floor, beam, bars, and trampoline. For kids six and up in our recreational classes, the coach introduces real gymnastics step by step. Things like rolls, cartwheels, handstands, and jumps. Your child will not be asked to do anything scary or advanced. Coaches meet each child right where they are and build from there.
What should my child wear?
Keep it simple. A leotard is great, but it is not required for a first class. Comfy, stretchy clothes work just fine. A fitted t-shirt with shorts or leggings is perfect. Skip anything baggy, and skip zippers, buttons, belts, skirts, and dresses. Gymnastics is done in bare feet, so you do not need shoes or socks. Pull long hair back and out of the face. Leave the jewelry at home so nothing gets in the way.
What should we bring?
Not much, and that is the beauty of it. Bring a labeled water bottle so your child can grab a quick drink. That is really all you need. We have all the equipment right here. If your child uses an inhaler or has any medical need, just let the coach and the front desk know before class starts.
How big are the classes?
Small, and that is on purpose. Our Pre-K classes keep a 6 to 1 ratio, which means six children for every coach. Our recreational classes for older kids run at 8 to 1. Smaller groups mean your child gets real attention and real coaching every single class. They are not lost in a crowd. They are seen, helped, and cheered on by name.
Will my child be safe?
Yes. Safety is the heart of everything we do. Every coach and staff member at The Zone, including the owners, is Safe Sport certified. Every one has passed a USA Gymnastics background check. And every coach holds CPR and AED certification. Our equipment is built for learning, with soft mats, a foam pit, and beginner-friendly setups. You can relax knowing your child is in trained, caring hands.
What if my child is shy or nervous?
That is completely normal, and our coaches see it all the time. Some kids jump right in. Others hang back and watch for a few minutes first. Both are okay. Our coaches are patient and warm, and they know how to help a nervous child feel safe and start having fun. Most kids are smiling within the first few minutes. By the end of class, a lot of them do not want to leave.
